Singapore and Germany have reinforced their strategic partnership by agreeing to enhance cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), industrial technology, research, and innovation. This decision emerged following a meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on October 27. The updated collaboration roadmap aims to leverage AI’s transformative potential to boost productivity and create new opportunities across various industries.
The new work plan builds upon an earlier 2024 roadmap, with a focus on expanding the implementation of industrial AI across sectors such as manufacturing, robotics, and logistics. Both nations are committed to ensuring AI is deployed responsibly, emphasizing safety, security, and a human-centered approach. As part of their enhanced cooperation, Singapore and Germany plan to undertake joint projects on emerging technologies, including semiconductors, quantum technology, space exploration, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing. This collaboration will be further highlighted during the Singapore-Germany Year of Innovation.
In addition to technological advancements, the partnership aims to strengthen economic ties between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU). Singapore intends to work with Germany during its 2027 ASEAN chairmanship to foster regional cooperation efforts, which include pursuing an ASEAN-EU free trade agreement and greater digital system integration.
Energy connectivity and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure like subsea cables and pipelines were also topics of discussion between the two leaders. Germany’s endorsement of Singapore’s voluntary initiative on underwater infrastructure protection underscores their shared commitment to international law and a rules-based global order.
This strengthened partnership indicates a significant step forward in advancing technological innovation and collaboration on a global scale, while also prioritizing secure, responsible use of emerging technologies.
