Amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held discussions during their summit on September 25, addressing the ongoing conflict and exploring potential diplomatic solutions. Their conversation coincided with Iran’s proposal of a seven-day plan intended to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ease regional hostilities.

China’s President Xi urged the United States to re-engage with Iran based on a June framework that had previously resulted in a temporary ceasefire, advocating for renewed negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive settlement. While Iran expressed support for this approach, it simultaneously advocated for its own peace initiative.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi outlined that the seven-day plan includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz to normal maritime traffic, contingent upon U.S. acceptance. The proposal also calls for an end to hostilities, the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the removal of oil sanctions. Despite the United States not publicly accepting this plan, there have been constructive discussions through mediators, particularly concerning nuclear issues. However, Iran remains firm on not making concessions regarding its nuclear program, including uranium enrichment.

During the summit, President Trump cautioned President Xi against providing any form of support to Iran, either directly or indirectly. U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue confirmed that China assured Washington of its non-assistance to Iran.

The conflict has significantly impacted energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, leading to heightened tensions across the Gulf region, Yemen, and Lebanon. In response to the growing security concerns, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey have engaged in talks about bolstering military and intelligence collaboration.
