Prime Minister Lawrence Wong of Singapore noted that the two countries, as small states with limited domestic markets and scarce natural resources, face similar challenges. By leveraging their openness and extensive international connections, they have successfully positioned themselves as leading financial and business centers that cater to larger regional markets.
Highlighting the robust economic ties between the nations, Wong pointed out that Luxembourg stands as the largest European Union investor in Singapore. In return, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU. Beyond bilateral relations, both countries are committed to enhancing the relationship between ASEAN and the European Union. Wong emphasized that Singapore and Luxembourg support regional integration and are dedicated to maintaining an open, rules-based international order.
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden is visiting Singapore from September 6 to 8, marking an important diplomatic engagement as the two countries celebrate 50 years of formal relations. During his visit, Frieden also met with Singapore’s President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. Their discussions focused on geopolitical developments and strategies for fostering stability, predictability, and compliance with the rule of law.
This visit is particularly significant as it coincides with Luxembourg’s establishment of its first resident embassy in Singapore, signaling a strong commitment to enhancing its engagement with Singapore and the broader region. As part of his official visit, Frieden is set to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8. His lecture will address Europe’s role and autonomy amid the evolving global landscape.
