In a historic move, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong is set to make an official visit to Timor-Leste from July 2 to 3, marking the first visit by a Singaporean leader to the Southeast Asian country. The visit underscores Singapore’s commitment to strengthening ties with Timor-Leste, a nation that has seen significant development support from Singapore over the years. This visit aims to further cement bilateral relations and explore new avenues for cooperation.
During his visit, Prime Minister Wong will hold meetings with Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão. As a gesture of appreciation for Singapore’s longstanding support, PM Wong is expected to be awarded the Order of Timor-Leste (Grand Collar), the nation’s highest honor. Singapore has been instrumental in Timor-Leste’s progress, particularly in areas such as governance and capacity building, and has been a key supporter of the country’s integration into the ASEAN community.
A key component of the visit will be discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation. Both nations are set to sign a memorandum of understanding and establish a new framework for ongoing consultations. This initiative aims to deepen collaboration between the two countries in governance, regional engagement, and capacity building, further solidifying their partnership.
Singapore’s engagement with Timor-Leste has been robust, with contributions ranging from peacekeeping to technical assistance and training programs since the early days of Timor-Leste’s independence. The relationship has only grown stronger since Timor-Leste joined ASEAN, with Singapore playing a pivotal role in supporting the nation’s integration into regional structures.
In addition to diplomatic engagements, PM Wong’s itinerary includes attending a state banquet and engaging with Singaporean citizens residing in Timor-Leste. He will be joined by senior ministers and officials on this trip, while Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong will assume the role of acting prime minister in his absence. This visit is anticipated to reinforce diplomatic relations and support Timor-Leste’s ongoing integration into regional institutions.
