The Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) has successfully launched its second Multi-Role Combat Vessel, named Valour, continuing the momentum in enhancing its naval capabilities. This development comes just nine months after the launch of its predecessor, Victory, underscoring Singapore’s commitment to modernizing its fleet. The launch ceremony, held at Benoi Shipyard, highlighted the rapid progress made by ST Engineering, as CEO Vincent Chong noted that lessons learned from the construction of Victory allowed for Valour’s launch three months ahead of schedule. Future vessels in this class are anticipated to benefit from further advancements in production efficiency.
The introduction of the new MRCVs is a strategic move to replace the ageing Victory-class missile corvettes. These advanced warships are designed with flexibility in mind, enabling integration with various unmanned systems and supporting a range of missions. The fleet, which will include ships named Victory, Valour, Vigilance, Valiant, Vigour, and Vengeance, is scheduled for progressive delivery starting in 2028. At the Valour’s launch, Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam stressed the critical nature of maritime security amid increasing global tensions and disruptions, particularly in vital sea lanes like the Strait of Hormuz. The new vessels, with an operational range of approximately 7,000 nautical miles and endurance of over 21 days at sea, are poised to bolster Singapore’s maritime defenses.
Construction has already commenced on the third and fourth ships in this series. Shanmugam highlighted the ability of Singapore to independently design, build, and maintain sophisticated naval vessels as a testament to decades of investment in the nation’s defense sector. This project demands intricate systems integration work, which includes managing aspects like power distribution, cooling systems, and mission module requirements, as outlined by the Defence Science and Technology Agency.
Command of the newly launched Valour has been entrusted to Lieutenant-Colonel Timothy Low, a seasoned 19-year veteran of the navy and former commander of the missile corvette RSS Vigilance. Low expressed his ambition to foster a pioneering spirit within his crew, aiming to contribute to the ongoing evolution of the Republic of Singapore Navy. His leadership is expected to be instrumental as these new vessels are brought into active service, marking a significant step forward in the navy’s operational capabilities.
