Meta’s introduction of an AI-driven image generation feature on Instagram, known as Muse Image, has ignited privacy debates. This new tool allows users to create AI-generated images by utilizing photos from public Instagram profiles. The feature is set to use these images by default, prompting concerns from privacy advocates who argue that users might not be fully aware of how their publicly shared images could be repurposed.
According to Meta, Muse Image includes several safety protocols. Notably, private accounts and those belonging to users under 18 are automatically excluded from this feature. Adult users with public profiles, however, have the option to opt out, although this requires them to navigate to the “Sharing and Reuse” section within their privacy settings. Critics point out that this opt-out mechanism is not prominently placed, suggesting that users should instead have the choice to opt in before their images are available for AI processing.
Further concerns have been raised regarding the inadvertent inclusion of children in photos posted by adults. These images, even when shared by adult users, could potentially be used in AI-generated content, despite Meta’s stated protections for underage accounts. Privacy experts emphasize the potential risks this poses and urge for more robust protective measures.
In response to these privacy concerns, Meta assures that Muse Image is equipped with safeguards to prevent misuse and has a reporting system for inappropriate AI-generated content. Currently, the feature is accessible via the Meta AI app and Instagram Stories in the United States, as well as through WhatsApp in selected countries, with plans for broader availability in the future.
