This appeal comes in light of a recent declaration by Japan and the Philippines to commence negotiations aimed at delineating maritime boundaries and continental shelf claims according to international law. Some analysts have pointed out that the proposed zones might overlap with regions claimed by Taiwan.
Officials from Taiwan have indicated that both Japan and the Philippines have reassured Taipei that any future agreements will not impose legal obligations on third parties and will adhere to established international legal standards. Taiwan’s administration emphasized its commitment to engaging with both countries to protect its maritime interests, including fishing rights and access to resources in the area. Moreover, authorities highlighted that existing agreements with Japan and the Philippines will remain valid.
This issue arises amid heightened regional tensions following China’s assertion of claims over waters east of Taiwan, coupled with its coast guard patrols in the vicinity.
