Asian stock markets showed mixed results on Monday amid global economic uncertainties, while Brent crude oil prices held steady above $104 per barrel. This development follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of a controversial plan to purchase diesel from Russia, which aims to mitigate rising fuel prices but has drawn criticism from U.S. lawmakers.
In the Asian markets, South Korea’s Kospi experienced a significant drop of 3.7% to 6,384.24, whereas Hong Kong’s Hang Seng saw a modest increase of 0.3% to 24,271.20. Meanwhile, Shanghai’s Composite Index fell by 0.4% to 3,797.24, and Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.8% to 8,783.20. India’s Sensex also witnessed a decline of 0.8%, and Tokyo’s markets were closed for a holiday.
In Europe, stock markets showed more positive movements, with Germany’s DAX rising 0.5% to 25,213.52, France’s CAC 40 gaining 0.3% to 7,826.70, and the UK’s FTSE 100 advancing 0.5% to 10,602.21. These gains came as U.S. stock futures indicated a potential uptick, following a week of gains on Wall Street.
The proposed diesel deal, involving an initial supply of more than 300,000 tonnes from Russia, has sparked concerns due to its potential to bolster Russia’s energy revenues amid its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators has urged the Trump administration to reconsider the decision. Despite Trump’s assurance of an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, reports of ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure suggest challenges to its implementation.
In the energy markets, Brent crude saw a slight increase of 0.1% to $104.76 per barrel, while the U.S. benchmark crude declined 0.4% to $91.50. Oil prices continue to fluctuate amidst uncertainties related to the conflict with Iran and disruptions in global energy supplies.
Meanwhile, inflation concerns are resurfacing in the U.S. A University of Michigan survey indicated that consumers expect inflation to rise to 4.7% over the coming year, up from 4.6% the previous month. Investors are keeping a close eye on upcoming U.S. inflation and retail sales data, as well as quarterly earnings reports from major banks, for insights into the economic landscape amidst these challenges.
