Zaqy Mohamad has been appointed as Singapore’s new Acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, succeeding Faishal Ibrahim who resigned from his political roles due to a personal lapse in judgment. Faishal’s departure from the People’s Action Party and his parliamentary position on July 20 was prompted by interactions with a female member of the public that were deemed inappropriate. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong addressed the issue, explaining the circumstances that led to Faishal’s decision to step down.
In his new role, Zaqy is committed to maintaining and strengthening the engagement with the Muslim community in Singapore. He emphasized the importance of understanding and addressing the needs of the community, ensuring continuous support through various initiatives. Zaqy plans to collaborate closely with the M3+ network, as well as volunteers and community partners, to enhance programs that support and uplift the Malay-Muslim community.
Reflecting on his predecessor’s exit, Zaqy expressed sadness, highlighting the years of collaboration and friendship he shared with Faishal. Their professional relationship spanned nearly two decades, during which they worked together on numerous projects and initiatives. The departure of Faishal has not only affected Zaqy but also resonated with several Malay-Muslim lawmakers and community leaders, who have voiced their disappointment over the situation.
Despite the circumstances surrounding the resignation, community leaders and lawmakers have acknowledged Faishal’s contributions during his tenure.
